Founded a century ago this year, the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine aimed to integrate dental education into the modern research university: it was only the fourth such university-affiliated dental school in the country.  Dean Emeritus Allan J. Formicola explores the history of the school in a lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6pm.  It celebrates not only the College’s centennial but also the publication of Dr. Formicola’s history, A Dental School on University Lines: The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, 1916-2016 (Columbia University Press) – the first full-length history of the dental school.

Dr. Formicola will trace the twist and turns in the College’s history from its inception to the present day as one of the premier dental schools in the country.  He discusses the stellar group of early leaders who led the College – particularly the giant among them, William J. Gies, a biochemist of international repute who did pathbreaking dental research.  The college’s leadership, faculty, students, and alumni/ae over the past century will all be explored.

Please join us after the lecture for a reception during which Dr. Formicola will be signing copies of his book.  The history is being distributed free by the College of Dental Medicine.
